What is the age for marriage registration in China

Time:2025-09-01 Views:1682

The legal age for marriage in China is not earlier than 22 years for men and 20 years for women.
The procedure for obtaining a marriage certificate can be divided into three steps: application, examination, and registration:
  (1) Apply.
Both the man and woman who request marriage must present their household registration certificate, resident ID card, and a signed declaration stating that they have no spouse and no direct blood relationship or collateral blood relationship within three generations with the other party. Apply for marriage registration together at the marriage registration authority in the place where one party's household registration is located. Both men and women must be present when applying for registration. If you have been divorced before, you should also hold a divorce certificate. In places where premarital examinations are conducted, a hospital certificate of premarital examination should also be held.
  (2) Review.
When reviewing the marriage application of both parties, the registration authority may, if necessary, require the parties to provide relevant proof materials, conduct necessary investigations, or designate a project for medical appraisal.
  (3) Register.
After examination by the marriage registration authority, if it is deemed that the marriage conditions are met, registration is allowed and a marriage certificate is issued. If the marriage registration authority fails to register, it shall issue a written explanation stating the reasons for the failure to register.
  1. Both the man and the woman who are required to register their marriage must present the necessary documents and jointly apply to the marriage registration authority of the district or county-level civil affairs bureau (or town government) where one party has a permanent household registration. Those who apply for retroactive marriage registration or remarriage registration shall follow the marriage registration procedures.
  2. Both parties shall personally apply to the marriage registration authority and fill out a "Declaration of Application for Marriage Registration".
  3. Both parties must personally sign or fingerprint in the "declarant" column of the "Application for Marriage Registration Declaration" in front of the marriage registrar.
  4. The marriage registration authority reviews the documents and statements submitted by both parties, and if they meet the conditions for marriage registration, they are allowed to register.
Time limit and fee standard for marriage registration:
  1. Registration deadline: If all documents are complete, registration will be made on the spot and a marriage certificate will be issued.
  2. Fee standard: 9 yuan per couple for domestic marriage registration.
